Comments about Ryobi Ryobi Factory-Reconditioned 15 Amp, 13" Surface Planer with RapidSet Blade System:

For a portable planer (at this price) you can't find a better one. The cutter has only 2 blades so don't get in a hurry with this one. Snipe is practically eliminated with proper usage: lift up the tail end of the piece until 6" of board has passed through the cutter and then lift the front of the board on the last 12" of board to go through the cutter. That being said, I had one problem with the planer. The power switch was was loose. I merely removed and snapped it on to its based completely and then re-installed (5 minutes tops). I really liked the machine. It does as well as my father's Rigid planer which was over twice what I paid for the Ryobi.[...]

Comments about Ryobi Ryobi Factory-Reconditioned 15 Amp, 13" Surface Planer with RapidSet Blade System:

I like to mill some of my own logs occasionally, and a couple of light passes on each side make those band saw cuts dissapear in a hurry.
I just took it out of the box, put on the handle for height adjustment, turned it on, and passed some cedar through, and the finish was very fine, similar to that of a very sharp hand plane, almost glass like. Since all I'll be planing is cedar, i doubt I'll need sharpening anytime soon.

Comments about Ryobi Ryobi Factory-Reconditioned 15 Amp, 13" Surface Planer with RapidSet Blade System:

Never again CPO Ryobi! This Ryobi AP1301 planer arrived having previously been run with the dust collection shroud off but with the power on, which caused the cutter head safety lock to engage while the thing was running, permanently damaging a disk-shaped part on the end of the cutter head cylinder. That part also supports the tabs on the end of the blades.

After many tests I found that there was no way that I could avoid really, really bad tearout with the machine. So I eventually used a machinist's indicator gauge to measure blade distance above the bed. I found that one blade was extended 7 mils farther than the other, and traced the problem to the damaged part.

Two 100-mile round trips to the Ryobi repairman later and more than a month of time lost (Ryobi was slow to send the repairman the part), I finally have a repaired planer back.

Comments about Ryobi Ryobi Factory-Reconditioned 15 Amp, 13" Surface Planer with RapidSet Blade System:

This is my first thickness planer and I'd say it's a great starter rig. Quick set up and it works nicely right out of the box.

It's not the most powerful kit on the planet. Be prepared to take minuscule passes of a 1/64" at a time when going through wide stock. As with any lunchbox planer, it will snipe if you're not careful. Support your workpiece and give yourself an extra few inches of offcut at either end whenever you can. It's also noisy as hell, so ear protection is a must.

Looking ahead, I haven't had a chance to see what blade replacement will be like. The height adjustment rack seems a bit clunky, so that may well be the point where the machine fails and needs to be replaced in a few years.

For the time being, though, I'm a happy customer.

Highly effective tool that opens many possibilities to the home Do-it-yourselfer. I am still amazed at the results we produced creating our own wainscoting (sic?). I am eagerly working on new projects with amazing little, well priced machine. I have a shop full of Ryobi tools and I have not been disappointed yet. Ryobi really makes it economical to have all the tools to complete just about any home project.

Comments about Ryobi Ryobi Factory-Reconditioned 15 Amp, 13" Surface Planer with RapidSet Blade System:

I have a home workshop and this tool works well for my needs. It makes a very smooth surface and the exhaust port to the side is handy to vaccum up the sawdust, as there is a lot. The only problem I see is about three inches of snipe at the end of my boards, but I think if I build a longer support on the workbench I mount it to it will help that, or if i were to run a board behind it that should fix it as well. The tool is powerful enough for my needs and cleans up rough cut cherry with no problems leaving a nice smooth finish.

Comments about Ryobi Ryobi Factory-Reconditioned 15 Amp, 13" Surface Planer with RapidSet Blade System:

Excellent value for someone looking to get started in woodworking. Doesn't have all the bells and whistles that higer priced production models have and there is about 4-7 thous' of snipe for about 3" on each end of the finished board. It is powerful and lightweight, can be stored under the bench when not in use. Chip chute and dust collection are good. Not for heavy duty use or production shop, but great value for average woodworker.

flawed
By remorsefulbuyerVerified Purchaser from US on 2/16/2009

Comments about Ryobi Ryobi Factory-Reconditioned 15 Amp, 13" Surface Planer with RapidSet Blade System:

It has a tragic flaw.
The thickness setting can drift,
leaving the trailing end thicker than the leading end.
This, even when used on reasonably soft wood,
free of defects, and not cutting too deep.
I decided to keep it for the same reason I chose to buy it, affordable.
Also snipes.

CPO Ryobi Response: We are happy to issue a replacement or refund, should the item be defective and returned with 30 days.

Comments about Ryobi Ryobi Factory-Reconditioned 15 Amp, 13" Surface Planer with RapidSet Blade System:

I purchased a 1928 "Arts & Crafts" style home. All of the door and window trim had multiple coats of old paint on them. Rather than stripping tieh paint or applying a faux graining paint, I removed all of the trim and ran them through the planer with excellent results. It now looks like brand new wood and the palner has paid for itself a hundred times over. Jay Everett
